3 Key Areas to Maintain in Your Hot Tub

With great luxury comes great responsibility. Whether you have an indoor or outdoor hot tub, there are many components that need maintaining so you can have a healthy and relaxing experience. But never fear: the professionals at Pool and Hot Tub Depot are here to guide you through the process and answer your questions.

Here are the key areas to maintain in your hot tub:

The Filter Cartridges

The  filter cartridges are the kidneys of your hot tub. If they are not cleaned, swapped, and eventually replaced, the hot tub’s heart will strain to keep pumping. Using the right cleaning product, it’s best to clean the cartridges every month to remove the mineral particles and other impurities. As you’re cleaning one cartridge, swap in a new one that’s dry and clean to prolong the cartridges’ lives. A quick rinse weekly will help extend the time between cleanings as well. Filters do degrade over time and typically they should be replaced every 12 months or 10-15 cleanings, depending on how you want to keep track of the age.

The Hot Tub Shell

As you use your hot tub, scum and scale lines can appear at the water level, as well as mineral deposits. They will stain the hot tub itself just as your bath tub can stain with that annoying ring. But no matter—if you clean your hot tub every two-three weeks, you’ll succeed in preventing bacteria and algae from growing. For best results, the Pool and Hot Tub Depot professionals recommend:

  • draining your hot tub a few inches for better access to the lines and mineral deposits
  • using EcoOne Spa Shell Cleaner and applying it to a sponge or cloth
  • wiping the hot tub’s water line area with the cleaner in the sponge or cloth
  • wiping the water line area a second time with a clean wet sponge or cloth

  • The Water

Just as the hot tub can have mineral deposits, so can the water. The chemicals and sanitizers you’ve added to clean the water and fight bacteria need to be tested for and replenished regularly. The water in your hot tub will reach a saturation point where the chemicals are not dissolved as effectively, this measure is called total dissolved solids or TDS. When TDS is high, your chemicals will not work effectively or at all, leading to increased use with lower effectiveness. That’s why you should change the water every three months; it’s for the health and the maintenance of your hot tub.

Special note: Keep in mind that the times suggested above depend on how often the hot tub is used. For instance, if your hot tub is used often, clean your filter cartridges more often, and don’t wait the three months to change the water if it’s a dark colour or gives off a foul odour.
